The Sportsman’s Charity Dinner 2011
The Golf Classic 2011
The twelfth holding of The Sportsman’s Charity Golf Classic was played at Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society, Barnton Avenue, Edinburgh on Friday 2nd September 2011. A total of seventeen teams of four players took part in some very welcome dry weather – at least for the duration of the golf. The format was the usual texas scramble strokeplay with a “shotgun” start. The team with the winning net score, receiving the traditional hickory maple headed putters supplied by St Andrews Golf Company, Largoward, St Andrews, was RHC Cricket Club Business Select, who were strong winners from P M Solutions and Friends with Scott Foster’s Royal Bank of Scotland team and Stocktrade in third and fourth places. There was a tie for the best gross score between Turcan Connell/McNaughton Physio and Lindsays, the winner of the longest drive, using a replica George Nichol brassie, being Ben Manning of RHC Cricket Club Business Select and the winner of nearest the pin being Charlie Brydon of The Old Course Hotel Golf Resort and Spa.
An enjoyable dinner was held in the clubhouse after the golf with the players being well entertained by Willie Hunter, the well known Edinburgh solicitor and after dinner speaker. A raffle and a brief auction, featuring prizes from The Old Course Hotel Golf Resort and Spa, Luffness New Golf Club and Vino, were held resulting in the event raising a total of £4,870.41 for distribution by the Charity.
The support provided to the event by the teams, Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society, the volunteer helpers and all of those who donated auction and raffle prizes is very much appreciated by the Charity and all added up to provide a very successful occasion.

The fundraising during the evening included the auction of a wide ranging selection of items, including a unique collage of the 1984 Grand Slam touch judge flags, a VIP Day with the Red Arrows, a coaching session with Chris Paterson (one of the Directors of the Charity), lunch for 12 people at Murrayfield with Andy Robinson and Gregor Townsend, a unique All Blacks Jersey signed by the 2005 squads who defeated both the British and Irish Lions 3-0 in New Zealand and all the Home nations teams in their tour of the British Isles, paintings by John Bellany, Jolomo and Margaret Evans, hospitality at the Roxburghe at Kelso, Prestonfield, the Scottish Grand National and the Scottish Open at Castle Stuart, and film memorabilia of Marilyn Munroe, Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando, John Travolta and the Bee Gees and Paul Newman.
The generosity of those present and the donors of the many auction and raffle prizes enabled The Sportsman’s Charity to raise a sum in excess of £60,000 during the evening and funds will be distributed by the Charity to support the three main charities chosen for this year’s event, Help for Heroes, Radio Forth’s Cash for Kids/Teenage Cancer Trust and Prostate Scotland, as well as other smaller charitable organisations operating in the areas of sport, children, disability and the disadvantaged, these being the main areas included in the aims of the Charity.
Next year will be the 30th Anniversary Dinner of The Sportsman’s Charity, to be held at Prestonfield Hotel on Friday 3rd February 2012, the eve of the Scotland v England Calcutta Cup rugby match at Murrayfield. The evening began with a drinks reception hosted by Prestonfield, the 275 guests then having dinner in the Stables followed by dancing to the Robert Black Band into the early hours of the next morning.
